What is the PSAT

The PSAT/NMSQT can qualify you for the National Merit Scholarship Program and other scholarships.

The Content of the PSAT

The test takes 2 hours and 45 minutes and consists of 3 tests: the Reading Test, the Writing and Language Test, and the Math Test. Most of the questions are multiple choice, though some math questions ask you to write in the answer rather than select it.

Reading

  • 47 multiple-choice questions
  • 60 minutes
  • Tests comprehension and reading skills from a variety of passage genres

Writing & Language

  • 44 multiple-choice questions
  • 35 minutes
  • Tests ability to edit text from a variety of passage genres

Math (Calculator Okay)

  • 27  multiple-choice questions
  • 4 grid-in questions
  • 45 minutes

Math (No Calculator)

  • 13 multiple-choice questions
  • 4 grid-in questions
  • 25 minutes

Three Types of PSAT

PSAT 8/9, which is the PSAT desgnated for 8th-9th graders

 

PSAT 10, which is the PSAT designated for 10th graders

 

PSAT/NMSQT, which stands for National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, is the PSAT that can be taken by 10th and 11th graders. Qualifying scores may qualify students for the National Merit Scholarship

Test Costs

Fees range by test type, but usally are paid by the school. Please refer to your school for costs.
